When digging through a bunch of my old hard drives I discovered some awesome tunes that I assumed had been lost over the course of several years. This particular track by none other than the man Aaron Funk (you may know him better as Venetian Snares) was one that got me through many long hours of photoshop tutorials way back in high school. The extreme panning reminds me of the days when I used to listen to music on earbuds. Ahh, nostalgia.

Directions to See a Ghost is the second album from Texas Psych Rockers The Black Angels. It was released digitally on April 15, 2008 by Light in the Attic Records. This certainly is a moving album. It's chock full of heavily verbed guitar coupled with driving drums and gritty bass that all but scream Velvet Underground influence. This comes as no surprise as the band's name is derived from the Underground's 'The Black Angel's Death Song.' Lead singer Alex Maas seems to tap into a bit o' the old Jim Morrison on the opening track 'You On The Run.' Give this album a good hard listen and, as always, if you like it, BUY IT!

Tetsuya Ishida was a Japanese painter who died May 23,2005 after being hit by a train. His death was suspected to be a suicide which isn't surprising when contrasted against his near-futilistic artwork. Conformity and claustrophobia weigh heavy in his art, portraying - oftentimes himself - characters in scenes of mundane synchronization. I admit it's difficult to not view the world as he did so many times, I just wish someone would have given this guy some LSD.

The Flower Travellin' Band were a Japanese Heavy Psych band that wrote albums and gigged in the late 1960's and early 1970's. The band started as a side project of Yuya Uchida when he returned to Japan after visiting his good friend, the legend known as John Lennon. When visiting Lennon, Uchida had the pleasure of meeting upcoming artists such as Jimi Hendrix and Cream.

They released an album titled Challenge! in 1968, featuring covers of songs by Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Jefferson Airplane, and Big Brother and the Holding Company, in addition to an original song. The art-work caused a stir in the Japanese media as it depicted each member posing naked.

What's the quickest way to fill Earth's atmosphere with the equal amount of pollution of one million cars driving for ten years nonstop in less than ten minutes?

Big Bombs! Between September 1957 and December 1962 the United States government and the Soviet Union dropped hundreds of Thermo-Nuclear bombs, ranging from 1 megaton to 58 megatons.

The worlds most powerful hydrogen bomb was detonated on the 30th of October 1961. The bomb had an explosive force of 58 megatons, or almost 6,000 times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb. The bomb was dropped by an aircraft, and detonated 365 metres (1,200 feet) above the surface. The shock wave produced by this bomb was so powerful, it went thrice around the earth. The mushroom cloud extended almost 60 kilometres into the atmosphere. Resulting downfall was measured over the entire northern hemisphere. A flash of light could be observed all the way to Hopen in the Norwegian Sea, Sør-Varanger in the Norwegian county of Finnmark and by the Inari Lake in Finnish Lappland.

Futuristic is in a way the new term for whatever direction Industrial has gone, trading in those fishnets for a pair of glowsticks, I suppose. Eerie abandoned warehouse echos are instead Juke/House vocals coupled with glitchy, almost tribal drums. If this is what they are calling Drum n Bass these days, Goldie might just be rolling in his proverbial grave. However, if we start calling it "Glitch-Step" or something fancy like that, Ed Rush and Optical junkies might just put their switchblades away and pick up some glowsticks with the rest of 'em.

What has become quite possibly the most anticipated midwestern music festival ever, Lollapalooza, has just released their 2010 line-up and let me tell you, it's off the fucking roof!
Lollapalooza's 2010 headliners include Lady Gaga, Soundgarden, Green Day, Arcade Fire, the Strokes and Phoenix (the last two I will definitely be seeing). As for non-headliners-but-should-be's I'll be doing my best to check out the following: Gogol Bordello, Deer Tick, Cypress Hill, The Black Keys, MGMT, Spoon, etc. Perry's dance tent is always a treat for the eyes and ears, boasting MSTRKRFT last year. This year I'll happily be seeing: Empire of the Sun, CASPA, 2MANYDJs, Digitalism, Erol Alkan, Perry Ferrel, etc.

Freedom's Children - Astra 1970

'Astra' is the quintessential album of the 60's. Heavy & fuzzy, shrouded in a melodious, psychedelic mist of mysticism.., and perhaps most emblematic of the time, politically active & socially emerged, while never lacking in musicianship or creativity. Globally acclaimed guitarist Julian Laxton's own invention, the "Black Box" gives this album a signature trippy sound which they patched every instrument through; guitars, synth, vocals, organ & drums. His design of this magical, oscillating multi-FX apparatus resulted in an offer by a London based company to prototype it. This funded a summer away from politically contentious South Africa and a dive head first into the psychedelic scene of 1969 London. Despite being unable to perform due to a Musicians Union sanction against South African artists, here they were able to soak up all the influence and inspiration they were so much inept to in apartheid South Africa. Although the London company eventually revoked their offer to prototype Laxton's "Black Box", the band was irrevocably impacted and at least had a free place to live, meet bands and jam where they consequently wrote the most epic and brilliantly crafted psych era album ever recorded. One that, even overlooked, is more ground breaking than anything I've ever heard come out of Pink Floyd or similar such acts. It achieves this lofty position in my book in a way that goes beyond just another good record. This album has a spiritual quality and vigor to it that truly embodies whatever magic it was that occurred in the 60s and does so in a manner which makes you feel as though you're there, even if only as an observer. There's a traditionality and reverence in the voice & lyrics that give you an increasingly strong sense of their message. As the albums journey presses onward, it takes you to a place where you too want to speak out about the self-imposed tragedies going on in our world right now. There's an undeniable presence of authenticity in this distinct primal incarnation of tribal humanity. Our link to the Earth and all living things, a memorial of an obligation long forsaken, saturates every track. This alone is assurance enough for me that those flowery ideals, lovers hearts & long hair are still, if not alive, at the very least assessable and fully capable of a 2nd act. Now is a time where we need it more than ever, a time where technology replaces reality more and more, our emotions squelched out by a tsunami of subversive advertising and thought control. The time is now to wake up, piece together where our crying souls fit into this mess of consumerist, high-tech expansionism and explore the expansion of our minds, the new frontier. Cerebral manifest destiny, let's take new territory and take back what's ours! May we evolve before we dissolve.

Ignorant people think that the new healthcare bill is going to fuck the economy. Trust me, the economy is already royally screwed. But at least I can finally go to a doctor for free! Even if there are long lines, my lack of money won't constrict my ability to see a friggin' MD.
When you think long and hard about it you will realize there is nothing more unfair than the American Capitalist system that is currently in place...well at least since G.W. Bush practically cut most of the Big Business taxes (which in turned effed everything for locally owned companies that friends and family are struggling to keep above the debtful waters). Americans spent 8 terrible years with mouths completely shut to turn around a do what? badmouth a president who finally has some goals set in mind to actually HELP AMERICANS!

Recently checked off of my long list of films to watch is "Saibogujiman kwenchana" or "I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK", a Korean film which a friend told me I must see some time ago. The film follows a young Korean girl who would fit in just fine if it weren't for her stolid belief that she is a fit-for-combat cyborg. This certainty sets the stage for the several quirks of the character to shine through which include incessant chatter with machinery and refusing to consume human food (batteries taste delicious however). The majority of the film is set in a mental institution where the lead role finds her match in a man capable of extracting people's souls from their bodies (or so he thinks). I've posted the first part, and I'm assuming that if you're all as internet savvy as I believe you to be, you'll easily be able to find the rest.

The project was brainstormed by Australian musician Brody Dalle who is no stranger to the mainstream rock scene and has worked with For this project she has collaborated with Tony Bevilacqua (former member of The Distillers), Jack Irons (What Is This?, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Walk The Moon, Eleven, and Pearl Jam) for this project.

Not only is Dalle a super cutie, she has a fuckin' awesome voice, something like an angel's harp dipped in whiskey and rolled up in a spliff. This album is chock full of epic riffs and ultra catchy melodies that will most definitely get stuck in your head more than that Lamb Chops Shit. Be sure to rock this one this spring while skating around feelin' like a badass.

Shoegaze: Ambient, mystifying, contemplative, astounding; there are many words that come to mind when trying to describe the emotions that can be expressed through this incredible genre of music. Unfortunately I've personally been posting the exact opposite of this for the past few weeks now: Dubstep, Electro, Thrash. Pretty much the most abrasive-to-the-ears kind of tunes and, although there's nothing wrong with that, I figured it was just about time for me to post something - well - beautiful.

We were recently contacted by Elliott Johnson aka Sleep Russia or his previous alias Hello Pacific. Elliot hails originally from St. Petersburg but now calls sunny Tampa, Florida home. He admits there has been some confusion with his alias being Sleep Russia and himself being born in St. Petersburg, Florida has caused some write-ups simply to assume that he is from St. Petersburg, Russia and thus is part of the Russian Electronic scene. I'll admit I was a bit confused myself! But here's the kicker:

I released Vol. 1 EP under Musickollektiv, a organization based in Russia. As of last month, I am their most viewed and trafficked artist. In the coming months Musickollektiv will have a segment in DJ MAG, one of the largest electronic music magazines in the world, and the most popular in Russia, and I will have my own piece of space in the section. I released Vol. 1 EP February 17 2010, and within 8 days had 1500 full album downloads.

Strongly influenced by '90s Shoegaze/Dreampop, Elliot's music is reminiscent of some of his self-proclaimed influences including some of my favourite Ambient artists: Ulrich Schnauss, M83, Slowdive, Telefon Tel Aviv, Boards of Canada and Trentemoller. When I played a few of Elliot's tracks on SoundCloud my first words were, "Awesome! Sounds a lot like Ulrich Schnauss..." Which for me meant a great deal, seeing as how Ulrich's 2001 release Far Away Trains Passing By [MegaUpload] is probably one of the most influencing Downtempo albums I've had the pleasure of hearing and single-handedly opened a whole new world of music for me. However, Elliot infuses new sounds that I haven't heard much in Ambient tunes: analog synths that ring out as well a bit of crunchiness that does the ears wonders. One thing is for sure: he makes the music his own, and that is the key to great producing.

Sleep Russia stays true certain characteristics of Shoegaze: thoughts of rain falling rays of sunshine, driving down the highway and being able to see lumbering puffy clouds for miles and miles; lightning striking on the horizon or a single tear careening down the cheek of beautiful girl.... You know music is doing it's job when it infuses you with images, thought, or inspires you in ways that words can't quite express. For me Vol. 1 does just that and more. This album will certainly be repeating on my iPod for a while and hopefully yours too! We hope to be hearing from Elliot very soon, and be sure to look for his upcoming writeup in DJ MAG!

I found it quite fitting that I came across this article focusing on the internet and the way we use it considering the little chat jeanz and I had earlier today about Facebook. Artist Jonathan Harris has a lot to say, and does so quite intelligently. This is one segment of his essay "World Building in a Crazy World" entitled "Our Digital Crisis".

"The Internet is causing mass homogenization of human identity, making us all look the same.
We use the same tools and social networks, fitting into the same templates, designed by companies to maximize page views and profits (with some notable exceptions like CraigsList).
Most online experiences are made, like fast food, to be cheap, easy, and addictive: appealing to our hunger for connection but rarely serving up nourishment. Shrink-wrapped junk food experiences are handed to us for free by social media companies, and we swallow them up eagerly, like kids given buckets of candy with ads on all the wrappers.
These experiences are sensitive neither to individual humans nor to the human collective, but only to page views and growth (in a corporate, not personal sense).

It is fitting that these companies call their customers “users”.
As we fill in the same boxes, answer the same questions, and express ourselves in the same generic ways, we might think this convergence of identity is a good thing, leading to some kind of global unity or mass empathy. But true empathy comes not from forcing people all to be the same, but from helping people to appreciate their differences.
Our online tools do a great job at breadth (hundreds of friends, thousands of tweets), but a bad job at depth. We live increasingly superficial lives, reducing our relationships to caricatures and our personalities to billboards, as we speed along at 1,000 miles an hour.

For the last 100 years—from letters, to phones, to faxes, to emails, to chats, to texts, to tweets—communication has been getting shorter and faster, but we are approaching a terminal velocity.
I doubt there is a shorter means of communication than the tweet, unless we start to make monosyllabic grunts at each other or communicate silently, brain to brain. Brief gestures of communication can be beautiful, but can also be shallow. So what will happen next? Will we stop at the tweet, or will we bounce back in the other direction, suddenly craving more depth? I’d bet on the latter.
But even if we start to crave more depth, we cannot run away to a more primitive time.
The momentum of technological growth is too strong for us to prevent it from defining our future. Like it or not, our future world will largely be digital.
Instead of fleeing to the forest, we must find the humanity in the machine and learn to love it. If we decide the humanity does not yet exist there in the ways we expect, then we must create it."
